Whale Tales: What the Humpbacks Really Think of Mission Beach…
A friendly, splashy blog told from the whales’ point of view
Hi there.
We’re the whales.
Yes, the big grey ones you sometimes spot cruising past Mission Beach like we’re on a slow, majestic road trip — because we are.

Every year, we migrate thousands of kilometres, and let us tell you… Mission Beach is one of our favourite pit stops. So pull up a chair (or a beach towel with opinions), get comfy, and let us explain what really goes on out there.
First of all, we see you.
You on the beach, pointing.
You on the boat, squinting.
You yelling, “WAS THAT A FIN? DID ANYONE ELSE SEE THAT?!”
Yes. That was us.
And yes, we always hear the yelling.
We even wave sometimes — you call it a “pectoral fin slap,” but honestly? It’s just us saying hey.
Why Mission Beach? Oh, we have our reasons.
Warm, calm water. It’s basically a giant whale spa.
Lots of room. Less traffic than further south — we like space.
Cassowaries on shore. We don’t know what they are, but they look intense and we respect them.
Views of Dunk Island. You think you like that view? Try seeing it from the water.
Plus, you all seem very excited to see us. It’s nice being adored.
What we do out here (besides looking fabulous):
1. Teach the calves how to be whales.
You know how anyone teaching a toddler to walk needs patience?
Try teaching a baby whale to breach.
“Bend… twist… jump— no, that was a belly flop, sweetie, but A+ enthusiasm.”
2. Catch up with old friends.
We’re very social. Migrating is basically an enormous family holiday.
3. Do big dramatic splashes for fun.
You call it “spectacular behaviour.”
We call it “Tuesday.”
Our thoughts on humans watching us:
We don’t mind!
Just a few notes:
We can hear you cheering from kilometres away.
Yes, we know the jumping makes your holiday.
No, we do not accept requests.
Please stop trying to guess our names. (Though “Wally the Whale” isn’t terrible.)
Mission Beach Moments We Love:
Early mornings when the water goes still and everything smells like rainforest.
The way kids lose their minds when they see a tail slap.
The tourists who film for six minutes and later realise their camera was pointing the wrong way.
The locals who casually say, “Oh yeah, whales are back,” like it’s no big deal.
Friends, it is a big deal.
We swam a long way to get here.
So if you spot us this season…
Give us a wave.
Take a photo (the right way around, ideally).
And enjoy the show — we promise we’re doing our best to look impressive.
Until then, keep your eyes on the horizon.
We’re never far.
Signed,
The Humpback Whales of Mission Beach
