A Beach Bag’s Perspective

A day at the Beach

Hi.
I’m your beach bag.
Yes, the bag. The one you fling over your shoulder like I’m weightless (I’m not), cram full of “essentials,” forget in the living room at Fridays at Three, then return to fetch because someone remembered the sunscreen at the last second.

Welcome to a typical day in my life at Mission Beach.

9:00am - The Packing Phase (aka: Chaos Hour)

First, you open me up and immediately overestimate my capacity.

Inside I’m thinking:

“Two towels? Sure. A water bottle? Fine. A full family-sized bag of chips? Doable. A hardcover novel, snorkel set, toddler snacks, three hats, shoes no one will wear, and a half-melted lip balm? Seriously?”

I’m basically the TARDIS at this point—bigger on the inside but only because you say so.

You zip me up (barely), hoist me onto your shoulder, and we’re off.

9:02am - Arrival at Wongaling Beach

Ahhh, sunlight. Salt in the air. The faint hope that today, maybe, just maybe, I won’t be filled with sand.

I’m quickly proven wrong.

Someone immediately sticks sandy hands inside me looking for “the blue bucket” (which I don’t have), leaving me filled with approximately half a dune.

9:15am - The Great Towel Extraction

You grab a towel with such force that I briefly consider taking flight.
Everything inside me shifts—chips crushed, sunscreen on its side, a lone grape escapes. I lose structural integrity.

A hat falls out. No one notices.

10:40am - Sunscreen Duty

My favourite part of the day is when sunscreen is uncapped directly above me, and I get to wear a sticky coconut-scented polka dot pattern for the next several hours.

At least I smell nice.

11:50am - Snack Time

You dig around inside me blindly, like a lucky dip filled with mystery crumbs.

Half-eaten muesli bar?
Yes.
A sock that wasn’t here this morning?
Also yes.
A single potato chip that somehow survived the towel extraction?
Absolutely.

No one ever closes me properly, so a cheeky breeze adds more sand for flavour.

1:30pm - The Heat Nap

You tuck me under the shade of a coconut tree, and I feel like royalty.
I cool down.
I breathe.
I contemplate running away with the gentle tide.

Then a toddler sits on me.

3:00pm - Departure

Everything wet, sandy, melty, or sticky gets shoved back into me.
Oh good, a seashell collection.
Oh look, a second seashell collection.
And this? This is seaweed. Why are we keeping seaweed?

I double in weight. No one questions it.

3:02pm - Stroll back to Fridays at Three

Inside I slosh with saltwater, sunscreen, crushed snacks, and—yes—seaweed juice.

I dream of a gentle rinse, a proper clean-out, maybe even a sun-dry.

Instead…
You just drop me on the patio

Classic.

But Here’s the Thing…

For all the chaos, crumbs, unexpected wildlife encounters, and questionable objects shoved inside me…

I love beach days with you.

I love being the keeper of adventures.
The carrier of fun.
The sandy, sun-tanned sidekick to your Mission Beach holiday.

Tomorrow, when you zip me open again and say, “Why is there sand everywhere?”
I’ll just smile.

Because that’s beach life — and I’m here for it.
