Exploring the Kennedy Walking Track

Step Into Paradise:

If you’re ready to swap beach towels for hiking boots, the Kennedy Walking Trail is calling your name. This popular coastal track is one of Mission Beach’s most breathtaking outdoor adventures — a scenic four-kilometre journey (one way) that takes around two hours at an easy, relaxed pace.

What makes this trail so special? It’s the variety. One minute you’re wandering along the beach, the next you’re crossing a rocky shoreline, then suddenly you’re surrounded by lush rainforest and peaceful mangroves. All the while, you’ll be treated to spectacular views across to the Family Group of Islands. The track is well-marked, so there’s no chance of getting lost — though if you time it with high tide, you might find yourself enjoying a little extra “splashy” adventure along the way.

As you wind through coastal rainforest, keep your eyes peeled for some of the locals: cassowaries, wallabies, lace monitors, jungle fowl, and a flutter of colourful butterflies. From the lookout points, gaze down into the clear waters below and you may spot turtles, dolphins, or even a dugong cruising by.

The trail starts at South Mission and leads you all the way to Kennedy Bay, passing the historical landing point of explorer Edmund Beasley Court Kennedy from 1848. If you have the time (and the energy!), you can wander the length of Kennedy Bay’s beach right to the mouth of the Hull River, with the communities of Hull and Tully Heads just across the water. When you're ready to head back, simply retrace your steps along the same pathway.

The first section of the trail is easy and accessible, with a wide boardwalk leading you to the aptly named Lover’s Beach. The second half adds a little more adventure with stairs and some light rock-hopping — nothing too wild, just enough to make it fun.

Walk quietly, take in the sounds of the forest, and enjoy the magic of this coastal wilderness. Just one friendly tip: stick to the path… it’s the best way to avoid any unexpected crocodile cameos!
