Birds of Prey of Mission Beach
Not Just the Famous Ones…
Everyone knows about the cassowary — Mission Beach’s unofficial mayor — but the bird scene here has more depth than a wildlife documentary.
(You can read our blog on the Cassowary here.)
Meet the lesser-known stars:

1. The Brahminy Kite - He who watches everything
This bird knows your secrets. Don’t ask how
Sea Eagle
2. Sea Eagle - The grumpy landlord of the coastline
Perched high, judging everyone, and occasionally swooping down to repossess a fish that some poor gull thought it owned. If there’s seafood nearby, the sea eagle has already filed a claim.
3. The Osprey - Nature’s fisherman
They hover, aim, splash—dinner secured in seconds. While the rest of us need rods, bait, and patience, the osprey just goes full dive-bomb buffet.
4. Wedge-tailed Eagle - The heavy weight of the sky
With a wingspan pushing three metres, it glides around like it owns the airspace — which, to be fair, it basically does.
Spot one circling high overhead and you’ll notice the long wedge-shaped tail that gives it its name. From up there it’s scanning the countryside for lunch, which could be rabbits, reptiles, or whatever else forgot to check the sky before heading out. In short: if you’re small, edible, and outdoors… the wedge-tail is probably already watching.
A Birdwatcher’s Paradise
Bring binoculars (or just good eyesight) — there’s so much more than the big blue-feathered celebrity strutting around the rainforest.
And after all that watching, head back for a relax at Fridays at Three
