Ghost Crabs of the Coral Coast
Ghost crabs are the paranormal sprinters of the beach
—one second you’re strolling along thinking deep thoughts about life (or snacks), and the next the sand itself explodes into motion as a tiny crab rockets sideways at Olympic speed. Naturally, this will make you question both your reflexes and your grip on reality.

Masters of camouflage, these little beach ninjas blend perfectly into the sand, with long eye stalks sticking up like periscopes scanning for danger… or drama. And honestly, everything is drama if you’re a ghost crab. A shadow? Suspicious. A footstep? Immediate evacuation. A passing seagull? Absolutely not, we’re out.
Their burrows are everywhere once you start looking—small, neat holes peppering the shoreline like the beach has developed a sudden case of acne. Each one is a ghost crab’s private bunker, and they take their real estate very seriously. If you linger nearby, you might see a pair of eyes slowly rise from the hole, followed by a cautious peek… and then—BAM—full-speed retreat for absolutely no reason.
But the real show begins at dusk. As the sun drops, ghost crabs clock on for their night shift, zipping up and down the beach scavenging for food. They’ll nibble on anything edible—tiny creatures, scraps, bits of seaweed—basically running a one-crab clean-up crew. All of this is done at high speed, with sudden stops, dramatic turns, and the occasional “freeze and hope no one noticed” pose.
If you’re patient (and very still), you can watch their whole routine play out: the cautious emergence, the sideways sprint, the awkward pause where they pretend to be invisible, and the inevitable panic dash back to safety. It’s like watching a tiny, anxious security guard doing patrol rounds with way too much caffeine and not enough confidence.
The best part? Once you notice them, you can’t unsee them. What looked like an empty beach is suddenly alive with movement—dozens of ghost crabs popping in and out, sprinting, hiding, and generally behaving like the sand itself has developed a personality.
So next time you’re wandering the Coral Coast at sunset, keep an eye on the ground. If something small, pale, and ridiculously fast bolts past you, don’t worry—you’re not being haunted… just thoroughly outpaced by one of the beach’s funniest locals.
